When in New York, APP it like a New Yorker
I had an epiphany that my life is going to change. It was March 27th 2011 when I got married to the love of my life. I was extremely happy, nervous and excited to begin my new married life in New York - The Big Apple!!
I still remember my 14 hour long flight from New Delhi, India to New York, United States. I couldn't help but to sneak out from my plane's window 10,000 feet above marveling at the city of architectural wonders and tall skyscrapers. New York - It's the city which never sleeps or was it me suffering from jet lag!!
People say that New York is a metropolitan city with people from highly diverse ethnicities. But to me, I could only spot two ethnicities -The ones who had iphones and the others who had Android. I had to make a choice which world did I belong? It was a life changing experience when I discovered the power of human touch on my new iphone. Yes, I joined the iphone tribe who use an app for everything eat, love or fall prey to the busy and confusing streets of Manhattan. My most frequently used app is the Google map app. This map puts to rest all the frustrating jokes about girls being directionally challenged. This app makes you smart and confident, while on the move.
You might find the famous Motorola GPS navigation print ads below, funny today. But only a few years before Google maps, this was a common scene while trying to get directions. What a radar is to an airplane, a GPS is to a car, a Google map is to a smart phone. There are a host of other map apps out there such as maps+, MapQuest, iphone maps etc. But Google map's accolades speak for itself. According to a recent new comScore Data, Google Maps ranked second only behind Facebook in 2012. The fact that it's free and available in more than 30 languages is like icing on top of the cake. You can search for addresses, places and businesses from around the world within seconds. Moreover, you can discover cool places to eat, drink, shop and play, with ratings and local reviews. Especially during winters, when you don't want to take off your gloves to see directions, the voice guided turn-by-turn navigation keeps your hands warm. You can travel by a train, bus, subway or on foot. Google Maps gives you the most updated information about train/subway timings, traffic information on road and high-street resolution images while on the streets.
The other day when I was trying to locate a building in Manhattan for an interview, Google map's 360-degree view of the building helped me reach in time.
